Advances in chemistry and physics have allowed researchers to begin to manipulate matter on an atomic scale. They have termed technologies resulting from this manipulation nanotechnologies, where one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Already manufacturers capitalize on passive nanostructures to create fire retardant and wear-resistant materials. Active nanoapplications that transfer information between nanostructures pose much greater technological challenges but also hold even more dramatic rewards.
